Browns Insider Shares Update On Shedeur Sanders’ Future And Whether Cleveland Will Draft New QB

On the surface, the 2025 Cleveland Browns season seems nearly identical to what we’re used to. A quarterback carousel, this time led by Shedeur Sanders, questionable coaching, and inconsistent defense are all past factors we’ve seen before. Still, there’s more hope than usual 15 weeks into a season with just three wins. That reason is that the 2025 5th round pick has shown flashes of promise at the quarterback position.
Could Sanders be the Starting Quarterback in 2026?

With the franchise in perpetual quarterback purgatory since 1999, is there a chance they will roll with Sanders in 2026, despite currently holding the third overall pick, where potential top signal-callers could be available?

Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot has insights into the situation.

When sharing if Sanders can be the starter heading into next season, Cabot said, “I don’t believe they’re there yet, but I think last week’s 23-20 loss to the Bills went a long way towards showing the Browns that Sanders has the potential to be a quality starter in the NFL, and that they might not need to draft a quarterback with one or both of their first-round picks. I think they’ll let the last two games against the Steelers and Bengals play out, and evaluate him over the course of his seven starts.”

As Cabot noted, he showed further potential in a bout against a defensively tough Bills unit, despite scoring a 70.5 grade last week according to PFSN’s Quarterback Impact Grades. He stayed efficient, throwing for 157 yards and a touchdown on 20/29 passes, while commonly extending drives with his legs.

Despite also throwing two picks, Sanders showed competitiveness and playmaking – two necessary qualities in a starting quarterback.

Cabot continued, “They must then determine if his upside potential is better than that of whichever quarterback they can draft in 2026. Depending on where they land with their first pick – it’s currently No. 3 – they might have a chance to draft Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza, Oregon’s Dante Moore or Alabama’s Ty Simpson… But Sanders has an excellent opportunity over these next two games to make the Browns forget about those three and only have eyes for him.”

Regardless of what Sanders does in the final games, they still need to do their due diligence on the incoming crop at the position. All three of Mendoza, Moore, and Simpson are highly regarded in NFL circles and shouldn’t be ruled out just yet.

In the meantime, Sanders will need to keep stating his case as the franchise’s cornerstone.
