What Happened to Lamar Jackson? A Look at Why the Ravens Superstar Is Not Playing vs. Packers

The Baltimore Ravens have everything on the line tonight against the Green Bay Packers. They’re on their last legs, fighting for a playoff spot at 7-8, two games behind the AFC North-leading Pittsburgh Steelers. A loss tonight would not only eliminate them from the playoffs but could put the coaching staff’s future in doubt.

With these factors in mind, Baltimore needs to leave it all out on the field, but their best player, quarterback Lamar Jackson, will not be available.

Lamar Jackson Injury Update

According to the final injury report, the superstar Jackson was listed as doubtful and unlikely to play due to a back injury. 90 minutes before the game, the Ravens officially announced that Jackson will be inactive against the Packers.

He’d gotten hurt last week in an integral Sunday night matchup against the New England Patriots, in which he was kneed in the lower back by a Patriots defender. Though he initially stayed in, the pain forced him to the sideline, and he was later ruled out for the game.

Once Jackson exited, Baltimore was forced to rely on backup Snoop Huntley once again this season. While the defense hung tough, the Patriots gradually pulled away, with the Ravens unable to convert third downs or create explosive plays.

Their eighth loss all but eliminated them from playoff contention, creating a must-win scenario this week at Lambeau Field. With Jackson out, the Ravens will need all they can get from Huntley.

With Jackson suffering knee, ankle, and toe injuries this season outside his ailing back, backups have had to start three games this year, with Huntley starting once against the Chicago Bears.

Against the Bears, Huntley played a spotless game, completing 17 of 22 passes for 186 yards and a touchdown with no turnovers. He also got it done with his legs, adding on 53 rushing yards, which played a key role in their 30-16 victory to end their four-game losing streak.

Huntley has also seen brief relief duty in other games, including a 3-17 loss against the Los Angeles Rams, as well as a 24-0 win against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Now, he has to face the Packers’ 13th-best defense according to PFSN’s defensive impact grades, which grades out at 76.7. Since losing top pass rusher Micah Parsons to a season-ending knee injury two weeks ago, the defense has yet to record a sack, though other position groups are mostly still intact and playing well.

It’ll be up to Huntley to keep the Ravens’ season alive against a shorthanded, but still solid, Green Bay defense.
