The Kansas City Chiefs vs. the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football was supposed to be a hard-fought battle between two divisional foes. As it turns out, the Chiefs didn’t need to fight too hard to get the best of Bo Nix and the Broncos, as they walked to a commanding 31-10 win.
Nix struggled mightily, as Denver’s offense looked rough all night. Now, one former player isn’t letting him off the hook for his disappointing performance.
Asante Samuel Sr. Breaks Down Bo Nix’s MNF Struggles
Two-time Super Bowl champion and former New England Patriot cornerback Asante Samuel Sr. unleashed on Nix during his show, “Say What Needs To Be Said.”
“If you were watching that game tonight, you know that Bo Nix had a chance to win this game. But obviously, he blew it, and there are no excuses for Nix anymore,” Samuel said.
“There’s no excuse for Bo Nix throwing an interception on the first series and giving the Chiefs the momentum. That resulted in seven points, and there wasn’t an excuse for Nix not to score six points after Patrick Mahomes threw an interception at the beginning of the second half.”
All of Samuel’s gripes are reasonable. He was spot on to point out how devastating it was that Nix couldn’t capitalize after Mahomes’ early third-quarter interception.
An elite quarterback like Mahomes rarely ever makes game-changing mistakes like that, but when he does, the opposing team absolutely has to take advantage. If they don’t, they’re dead in the water, especially if they’re down two touchdowns with an opportunity to make it a one-possession game.
With first and goal at the five after the Brandon Jones interception, Nix and the offense were forced to settle for a field goal after a holding penalty and a sack, which resulted in a fumble out of bounds by Nix. With prime field position, they notched just a field goal.
Overall, Nix and first-time play caller Davis Webb looked lost, resulting in the 26-year-old throwing for 131 yards, with a touchdown and a pick each.
For Week 1, Nix posted a 68.3 grade in PFN’s QB Impact Score, which ranked 28th in the league among starting quarterbacks. Nix and Webb will have to recalibrate the offense quickly, with the hopes of getting newly acquired star receiver Jaylen Waddle involved, who had just 1 catch for 2 yards.
The Broncos QB’s competition won’t get any easier in Week 2, as the Jacksonville Jaguars visit Mile High on Sunday, September 20 at 4:05 ET.
